崇高な使命

　９.１１の世界貿易センタービルの同時多発テロ。アメリカのニューヨーク市消防局の消防士３４３名が亡くなった。
　アメリカの消防士には語り継がれる意志、精神がある。
　 FIREMAN`S PRAYER
When I am called to duty, God, wherever flames may rage, Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child before it is too late Or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me, To guard my every neighbor and protect his property. And it, according to my fate, I am to lose my life; Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife. AMEN

　消防士の祈り
　緊急の命を受けたとき　神よどこで炎が吠えようとも　尊い命を救う強靭な力を与え給え　
　幼い子供を抱く力を　手遅れになる前に老人を救う力を　恐ろしい運命に遭わせぬために
　か弱い叫びも聞き逃さず　素早く確かに炎を消しとめよ
　私は天職に従い生命のすべてを賭け　人々と財産を守りたい
　そしてもし神よ　あなたの意志に従い命召されるとき　わが子と愛する妻に　
　あなたの慈悲を与え給え　　エーメン

　あの状況でどうしたらよいか？あのいたましい惨状に勇気を持ち立ち向かっていった消防士たちの、また犠牲になった人々の冥福を祈ります。グランド・ゼロの悲劇から続く悲劇が繰り返される現在。救出のまさに対極にある「殺す」ことは、消防士の崇高な精神のまえでは意味を成さない。なぜ？亡くなった消防士は問いかけているかもしれない。
